Since its launch in August 2015, Stone & Chalk has helped create a formidable fintech community across New South Wales and Victoria and has become recognised as one of the top fintech hubs globally.
Stone & Chalk has 24 Australian and international corporate partners, houses over 100 full-time startups, 352 residents, with 13 of these now exporting. Together with its 32 alumni, Stone & Chalk start-ups and scale-ups have secured over AU$211M of direct equity investment and have created 500 direct new jobs in the areas of fintech, cybersecurity, insurtech, data science and connected devices.
We are calling for Expressions of Interest to join our Community Team.
Do you love working with start-ups and have a start-up centric approach to designing and delivering valuable experiences for Start-ups?
We want you to have an ‘empathy first’ attitude. As you get to know our start-ups’ individual ideas, fears and aspirations, you will help them to continuously implement activities that create value and accelerate their growth and commercial success.
You will be accountable for delivering these activities for each start-up and also contribute to the wider community to grow the Fintech Ecosystem in Australia and internationally, where relevant.
As part of the Community Team you will be the resident ‘Start-up’ advocate and you will use your smarts to relentlessly network, coordinate and connect Stone & Chalk Start-ups to relevant programs and individuals/companies in the broader ecosystem that can accelerate their growth and provide commercial opportunity.
WHAT WILL HELP YOU SUCCEED?
An ability to think commercially, connect the dots to identify opportunities, and provide valuable connections that have the potential to lead to business partnerships. Relationship/account management and/or business development experience with SMEs will set you up for success.
Highly organised, able to prioritise project plans with key milestones and communicate progress updates to the wider team. Execute with attention to detail, delivering well-received events/activities strengthening demand within the community.
Confident presenter and uber networker – you will be communicating with over 90+ start-up companies based at Stone & Chalk and stimulating conversations across our corporate partner base to generate opportunities and connections.
Brownie points if you already understand and have experience of Fintech or working with startups!
A university degree with at least 5 years’ post qualification experience in a business/commercial role.

A DAY IN THE LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY TEAM…
You will be…
Supporting the implementation of the Community Engagement Program and spending time with Start-up members through all stages of the journey/ resident lifecycle to gain a thorough knowledge of their business and develop the ability to identify relevant and timely commercial opportunities, programs, and valuable connections to help them scale.
Designing and communicating relevant programs for all Stone & Chalk Start-up members based on their Start-up stage and needs, and working with the Community and Operations Co-ordinator in relation to all associated logistics e.g. catering, booking spaces and communications.
Delivering tours of Stone & Chalk for prospective Start-ups, Special Visitors, Corporate Partners, Nominated Mentors, Trade Delegations and Government Officials & Trade Parties.
Interviewing prospective Start-ups to assess their suitability as a resident of Stone & Chalk and/or welcoming a new resident on the beginning of their journey with us.
Supplying a continuous stream of content and news re Start-up events and activities to Social Media channels, community newsletters, website and other news channels.
Reviewing each Start-up’s Relationship Management Plan to make sure you are tracking against the activities planned. And of course you will be updating our CRM with all your interactions with our Start-ups.
Developing and managing relationships with the broader ecosystem including looking out for Start-ups that we could welcome in our hub when we have a capacity.
Helping those startups that are ready to transition out of S&C and ensuring they stay connected and involved with the community via our alumni program
HOW WILL YOU KNOW YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL?
Our KPIs will keep you honest and will include things like:
Feedback from our Start-ups on their interaction with you on their journey, and your ‘empathy first’ approach.
How you are tracking against the activities you agreed with each Startup.
Any ‘hero’ moments – after all, your job is to make our Start-ups successful so we expect plenty of ‘hero’ moments to come from you.
